The history of the Maison begins in the 19th century

The beginnings of the Maison Baume & Mercier date back to 1830, when the brothers Louis-Victor and Célestin Baume opened a watch shop in Le Bois (Switzerland). The business quickly became successful, among other things because the founders strive for perfection in every watch. Soon, the brothers opened a branch in London and later throughout the British Kingdom, supplying wealthy customers with chronographs and watches with major complications. At international exhibitions, the watchmakers repeatedly win numerous prizes. In 1918, William Baume and Paul Mercier finally founded the “Baume & Mercier” brand and quickly became one of the largest manufacturers in the field of wristwatches. While the Maison was mainly influenced by the Art Deco style in the 1920s, the company’s history was marked by the elegant and refined shaped watches in the 40s.

Round watches become innovatively shaped watches

In the 50s and 60s, the manufactory finally presented a concept that is still valid today, in which the Greek letter Phi indicates the original shape of the round watch. This was followed by the launch of various round models equipped with functions such as moon phase or triple date display. In the 1970s, the Maison once again delights with innovatively shaped watches such as the Stardust, once again proving its creativity. In 1973, the manufacturer finally introduced the Riviera, the world’s first steel sports watch. In 1988, the company was taken over by the Richemont Group.

Craftsmanship lived for years

The Maison’s great success is based in particular on its quest for uncompromising precision. With each new collection, whether women’s watch or men’s watch, the engineers combine artistic standards with technical possibilities to create real innovations that are elaborately handcrafted. To this day, the manufactory adheres to manual work and relies on the “Établissage 2.0” method, without neglecting the possibilities of modern technology. From design to development to assembly, each watch undergoes strict quality controls. The Maison also realised its technical ambitions with the development of its own “BaumaticTM BM13-1975A” movement.

Mercier Riviera – the sporty watch in the 70s style

Launched in the 1970s, the Mercier Riviera is still part of the manufactory’s range today and has hardly changed since then. Characteristic of the Mercier Riviera are above all the dodecagonal bezel with four visible decorative screws and the integrated bracelet. Nowadays, sports watches are available in numerous versions, for example with different dial colors. Many dials have a special wave pattern that is supposed to symbolize the mountains and the sea. The women’s watches of the Mercier Riviera are available exclusively as three-hand watches and are optionally equipped with quartz calibers or automatic calibers. As a men’s version, the Mercier Riviera is also available as a GMT watch, a moon phase watch or a diver’s version.

Mercier Clifton – sporty and elegant

If you are looking for a sporty, elegant men’s watch, you should also take a closer look at the Mercier Clifton line. In addition to three-hand watches, this series also includes chronographs, GMT watches and perpetual calendar watches. Most of the time, a mechanical automatic caliber ticks in these watches. For newer watches, the Maison relies on the current in-house caliber with a power reserve of up to 5 days (CLIFTON Baumatic). You can also choose between different dial colors, including black, white, blue, gray, green and red.

Mercier Classima – classic with round case

The Mercier Classima is also timeless and elegant, with its round case and restrained dial. In addition to fine stick indices, there are also Roman numerals at 3, 6, 9 and 12. The dress watches are available with both quartz and automatic calibers. Some Mercier Classima watches, including timepieces in the Classima Lady series for women, are also equipped with a chronograph function or complications, such as a moon phase display.

Mercier Hampton – modern and rectangular

Are you looking for a rectangular men’s or women’s watch? Then the Mercier Hampton line is made for you! With its rectangular case shape, the watch is reminiscent of Cartier’s Tank, but looks more modern and contemporary thanks to the stick indices and Arabic numerals. The women’s watches in the series are available exclusively with quartz movement and two hands and, depending on the version, set with diamonds. The Maison uses either gold or steel as the material. As a watch for men, the Mercier Hampton is only available in steel, but there are two case sizes to choose from. Watches with outsize dates or second time zones can also be found in the popular series.

Mercier Baume – the sustainable one

Because there is no other planet: With the Mercier Baume, the Maison has been pursuing the ambition of offering a particularly sustainable line since 2018. To this end, the manufactory manufactures some versions, for example from old skateboards or recycled PET, or uses reclaimed cotton and natural cork for the design of the straps (e.g. Ref. 10686). Characteristic of the trees are the round cases, loop lugs and the crown at the 12 o’clock position.
