Junghans: Tradition since 1861

The history of the Junghans manufactory began in 1861, when Erhard Junghans and his brother-in-law founded the watch components factory “Zeller & Junghans”. At the Lauterbachtal site, they initially produced components for other manufacturers, including bronze plates, hands and glass doors as well as hinges and pendulum disks. This was followed in 1866 by the manufacture of the company’s first own clock. With around 3,000 employees, the company was the largest clock factory in the world in 1903. In order to provide every workplace with sufficient daylight and enable precise production, the brand expands its factory premises with a light-flooded terraced building – still a landmark of the Schramberg watch factory today. The next milestone in the company’s history follows in 1946: Junghans builds the first wrist chronograph with its self-developed J88 caliber. At the same time, the newly founded German Armed Forces were looking for a service watch for their airmen, so the manufactory submitted the chronograph and was awarded the contract.

The 1950s - Junghans and the Bauhaus style

The manufactory in Baden-Württemberg continues to focus on the development of new technologies and by 1951 is the largest chronometer manufacturer in the whole of Germany. In 1956, Diehl GmbH finally acquires the majority of shares. In the 1950s, the company also wanted to have an everyday object – the kitchen clock – designed by an artist. The choice fell on the painter, sculptor, graphic artist and architect Max Bill, who studied at the Bauhaus and was one of the founders of the Ulm School of Design. Together with some of his students, Max Bill developed the first designer kitchen clock – a complete success for Junghans and the beginning of the collaboration with the artist, who also designed the purist wristwatches of the same name from 1961. In 1990, the manufactory also presented the world’s first radio-controlled wristwatch.

The Mega Solar Ceramic is presented to the world public

After years of development, 1993 marks another milestone in the company’s history. Junghans is the first manufacturer in the world to present a wristwatch that draws its energy from the sun and always displays the correct time thanks to a radio signal. The Mega Solar Ceramic is born. Another innovation in 2004: the manufactory presents its patented multi-frequency radio-controlled movement, which can receive time signals in different countries and change automatically.

150 years of Junghans

In 2011, the manufactory celebrates its 150th anniversary and looks back on a history full of highs and lows. To mark the occasion, the Junghans Meister series is being reinterpreted based on its historical role models – the Junghans Meister Chronoscope and Junghans Meister Chronometer timepieces are available in limited edition from selected jewelers as part of the anniversary celebrations. As part of the celebrations, the new company museum will also be opened, where visitors from all over the world will be able to learn about the history of the Maison and iconic watches such as the Meister. In 2018, the manufacturer is also celebrating the 100th anniversary of the famous Terrassenbau and is launching the limited-edition Meister Chronoscope Terrassenbau models to mark the occasion. Finally, in 2020, the Meister S Chronoscope sets new standards in terms of design, features and durability. In 2023, the company also proves that the inventive spirit in the workshops in Baden-Württemberg has not stood still, even after more than 160 years, with the Meister fein Chronoscope MEGA Solar, the first app-connected radio-controlled watch with solar drive and Chronoscope function.

Junghans as a synonym for the German watch

Whether Force MEGA Solar, Junghans Meister or a watch from the Form series – every timepiece from the manufactory is characterized by design sensitivity, meticulous production and craftsmanship. The design and construction process go hand in hand in the company to achieve a perfect end result. Not only does the finished watch have to meet the highest quality standards, but all watch components are also regularly checked – even during the realization phase. Only when all the individual parts have passed the checks does a Junghans watch become a Junghans.

Well-known collections from Junghans

Over the years, Junghans has launched a whole series of watches that are very popular both new and as vintage models. The range extends from sporty watches for men to automatic watches for women and has the right design for every taste.

The Max Bill - icon of the 1950s

Perfect readability, simple design – even today, after more than 50 years, the look of the Max Bill is almost unchanged and is still characterized by thin line indices and Arabic numerals. However, if you take a closer look, you will see the small details that make every Max Bill so special. For example, the Max Bill Type 4 has no numerals, giving it a decidedly elegant and understated appearance. The Max Bill Automatic, with its Bauhaus design, is also very much in the tradition of the designer Max Bill. If you want a quartz movement, a bill Quartz, which is available in numerous versions, is the perfect choice. Or would you prefer a bill hand-wound with a stainless steel case and a leather strap? The Max Bill MEGA is another watch with its own radio-controlled technology and the iconic kitchen clocks from the Max Bill range are still included in the manufacturer’s list.

Junghans Meister and Form - sporty and rich in tradition

The Meister series can look back on a long tradition and was first sold on the market back in the 1930s. With the current series, the company honors the traditional watch and adds models with complications such as a moon phase or day-date display to its list. While most of the watches in the series have a mechanical movement, the Junghans Meister MEGA is equipped with the J101.65 radio-controlled movement. The Form series is also diverse and has a sportier look than other models thanks to its perforated minute. In addition to three-hand models with quartz calibers, this series also includes automatic models with stainless steel cases, which have a slightly higher list price.

Junghans Pilot - mechanical wristwatches

History is also honored by the watches in the Pilot series, an automatic pilot’s watch that was launched in 1955 for the newly founded German Armed Forces. It is no coincidence that the look of the watch is inspired by an airplane cockpit. However, the pilot’s watch also leaves nothing to chance in terms of functionality and features a clear structure as well as luminescent numerals and hands to ensure optimum readability at all times. The 12-sided bezel is also characteristic of the timepiece.

Radio and solar - the modern collection

Those who prefer a more modern and contemporary look should take a closer look at the Funk and Solar series. The list in this series includes a variety of timepieces that are made from ultra-modern materials such as ceramic and have a digital display for the date. How about a Force Mega Solar, for example, whose case is made from black ceramic rather than stainless steel? Or would you prefer a bill MEGA Solar or a watch with the “small seconds” designation? The modern range has something to suit every taste.

The Junghans FORM A with automatic movement, which has a stainless steel case and is available with a fine leather strap, for example, is much more restrained. The bill Automatic is also available as a men’s watch and impresses with its versatility. For example, the men’s watch is available with a leather strap and black dial or with an elegant Milanese strap. The men’s watches around the bill MEGA Solar are also very popular.

Junghans watches for ladies

Junghans has exciting watches not only for him, but also for women. The FORM Damen, for example, is very popular with its understated, elegant look. A special feature of the FORM: Thanks to the interchangeable straps with quick-release function, the look of the watch can be changed quickly and easily to match any outfit. The bill Automatic Bauhaus is also simple and elegant, a truly iconic timepiece from Junghans, as is the Max Bill Quartz.

Unisex watches from Junghans

Are you looking for a unisex watch that cuts a fine figure on both men’s and women’s wrists? Nothing could be easier, as the Junghans range offers a variety of timepieces that can be worn by both him and her. How about a Fein Automatic or a Kleine Automatic, for example, which more than lives up to its name with a case size of just 34 mm. The minimalist dial also makes the watch a timepiece for every man and woman.

Limited editions and special models

Are you looking for a very special Junghans? Then let us advise you on the manufacturer’s special models and limited editions. How about a 1972 Chronoscope in the Sports Edition or a 1972 Competition PINK Edition, for example? Or you could opt for a watch from the exclusive “Erhard Junghans” series, which was launched in 2006 with the aim of producing high-quality mechanical watches in Schramberg once again. For example, the Maison uses a hand-wound J325 movement for the “Erhard Junghans 1”. Each of the watches also bears the individual limited edition number on the dial instead of the respective time digit – only 12 examples of the timepiece are available worldwide.
