Mido Watches

Mido – Watches with Timeless Elegance

Since 1918, the Mido brand has stood for technical innovations and unmistakable designs that are popular worldwide. Over time, the Maison launched truly iconic models, some of which can still be found in the manufacturer’s range today, such as the Ocean Star and the Multifort, or are very popular as vintage watches. It is also the uncompromising Swiss quality that distinguishes every Mido watch. For example, the company uses corrosion-resistant 316L stainless steel for the production of the cases and relies on basic ETA calibers for the movements, which are further developed in its own workshops. Some watches are also available with chronometer certification. Are Mido watches at the top of your wish list? Then feel free to make an appointment with SG Watches in Oldenburg and let us advise you personally on the Swiss Maison’s men’s watches and women’s watches. We will be happy to assist you with the purchase of your dream watch.

Mido: Swiss watches that have been inspiring since 1918

The history of Mido begins at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1918, the Swiss watchmaker Georges Schaeren founded the company “MIDO G. Schaeren & Co.”. The name “Mido” is not chosen by chance, but is derived from the Spanish “Yo mido” (in German: I measure). In the 1920s, the Maison initially produced elegant ladies’ watches, characterized by their colored enameled molded cases, as well as visually appealing men’s watches, whose designs were often based on the radiator grilles of well-known car brands. In addition to the look, Mido also relied on the technical inventiveness of the engineers from the very beginning and presented a cork crown sealing system in 1930, which later became known as “Aquadura”. This is also used in the Multifort, which was first introduced in 1934, an automatic watch that was not only anti-magnetic, but also shockproof and waterproof.

Introduction of the Ocean Star

In 1959, the next milestone in Mido’s history followed: the brand introduced the Ocean Star, combining two technical features. In addition to the Aquadura crown sealing system, the manufacturer also relies on the newly introduced single-shell case for the watch to ensure water resistance even under adverse conditions. In 1996, two more special watches in the history of the company followed. While the Bodyguard has an integrated alarm siren for personal protection, the Worldtimer can be used for the first time to automatically set the selected time zone by pressing the crown.

Architectural masterpieces inspire watchmakers

In 2002, the Maison unveiled another iconic collection that would mark the company’s history. With the All Dial line, Mido pays tribute to the architecturally impressive buildings of the Romans, such as the Colosseum in Rome. In the following years, the collections were constantly expanded, for example with a new line of the Mido Baroncelli and the new introduction of the Belluna. And the designers are also inspired by the Great Wall of China and present the “Great Wall” line in 2012. Mido is honouring the 40th anniversary of the Baroncelli with another innovation: in 2016, the Manufacture is presenting its first chronometer-certified movement with a silicon hairspring.

100 years of Big Date

In 2018, the “Big Date” and also the Maison celebrate their 100th birthday and have always remained true to themselves throughout all this time. For this special occasion, the company is launching the Commander Big Date, which is equipped with a large date window at 6 o’clock and has an exclusive movement. Since 2019, Mido has also been an official partner of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series with the Ocean Star nautical series. In 2020, the manufacturer presents the limited edition Mido Ocean Star Decompression Timer 1961, one of the most sought-after collector’s watches in recent history – all 1961 pieces are sold out within a few weeks. Since 2023, the Multifort has also been back in the manufacturer’s range and inspires both female and male audiences with its TV-shaped housing. Today, the company, like many other brands, is part of the Swatch Group.

Swiss movements in a class of their own

Cutting-edge technology, the highest quality materials and excellent automatic movements – this is what distinguishes Mido watches. For example, the automatic movements used meet all the strict requirements of classic watchmaking and are mostly designed with a transparent case back. Some watches are also certified as COSC chronometers and have thus passed the strict testing procedures of the inspection body. In addition to the Calibre 60, the chronograph automatic movement with a power reserve of up to 60 hours, Mido also relies on the Calibre 80, which scores with a power reserve of up to 80 hours and is used in various versions, such as the Calibre 80 Datometer.

Popular Mido collections at a glance

Since its beginnings in 1918, Mido has launched a whole range of high-quality models that are sometimes sporty, sometimes elegant and are sought-after collector’s items, especially as limited editions. For example, set off on new adventures with a Mido Ocean Star or feel the know-how of decades of watchmaking in a baroncelli. Or you can opt for one of the Mido chronographs, such as the Commander Chronograph. Whether it’s a men’s watch or a model for the lady: If you’re looking for mechanical watches from Switzerland, you should take a closer look at Mido watches.

The Ocean Star – the companion for all adventures

Whether on land or in the water – the Mido Ocean Star has been part of the manufactory’s range since 1944 and combines sporty design with maximum reliability and absolute waterproofness. It’s not for nothing that the Mido Ocean Star is also known as the “King of Waterproof”. To ensure perfect readability both above and below the surface of the water, the hands, numerals and indices are provided with the Super-Luminova® luminous material. The Mido Ocena Star is available in various versions, such as the Mido Ocean Star 39, the Ocean Star Captain or the Mido Ocean Star 200C. The model is also available with GMT function on request.

The Multifort – unparalleled precision

Since 1934, the Mido Multifort has been perfected and today impresses above all with its state-of-the-art automatic movement and its resistance to shocks and magnetic fields. As an all-terrain sports watch, the Mido Multifort is made of robust stainless steel and guarantees the best readability thanks to the anti-reflective sapphire crystal. This series also consists of a variety of lines, which sometimes know how to inspire with the iconic TV-shaped housing, sometimes with a round case. How about a Mido Multifort TV Big Date or a Mido Multifort GMT, for example? The Mido Multifort Skeleton Vertigo is particularly exclusive, while the Patrimony model relies on an elegant dial and leather strap. As a men’s watch, the series also includes popular automatic watches such as the Power Reserve, the Multifort Gent or the Powerwind.

Mido Commander – a technical icon

The Commander can also look back on a long history and has been part of the Mido range since 1959. A true icon that combines timeless elegance with high-precision automatic movements. How about a Mido Commander Lady or a Mido Commander Gradient, for example, which impresses with a transparent dial and a power reserve of up to 80 hours? The watches of the Mido Commander 1959 series are particularly elegantly designed, which, like the Icone, has a day and date display on the 3.

Baroncelli – timeless design

Whether as a moon phase, tradition, signature or heritage, whether with the suffix II or III – the Mido Baroncelli has been making collectors’ hearts beat faster since 1976 and is available both as a men’s watch and as a watch for women. Thanks to its transparent back, the decorated movement of the Mido Baroncelli can be admired. And when it comes to case size, Mido watches also impress all along the line – from watches with a diameter of 29 mm to 42 mm cases, there is a suitable version for everyone, sometimes with a metal bracelet, sometimes with a colorful leather strap.

Belluna – a real masterpiece

If you are looking for something special, you should not miss the Belluna line. With this series, Mido has created real masterpieces that stand out above all for their dial, where the guilloché sunburst decoration reflects the light in a special way. An effect that is also enhanced by the cushion-shaped housings. The series consists of women’s and men’s watches and also likes to rely on exclusive materials such as mother-of-pearl or diamonds.
