Glashütte Original: the history and tradition of a brand of international importance

Glashütte Original has stood for durability and the highest quality since 1845 and manufactures watches that use mechanical and automatic movements instead of quartz. In the middle of the 19th century, the first watchmakers settled in the small town in order to manufacture watches and watch parts in Glashütte according to the old tradition of craftsmanship and with financial support from the government. The foundations were laid for the successful development of the watch industry and many independent companies were established. At the end of the Second World War, the individual companies were expropriated and in 1951 the previously independent companies merged – the VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe, or GUB for short, was born. After reunification in 1990, a new limited company was registered in October. Wristwatches were now produced under the brand names GUB and Glashütte Original. While the GUB watches included models in which purchased Swiss movements were used, the Glashütte Original products were the first to use a German-manufactured caliber. Since 2000, Glashütte Original has been part of the Swatch Group, the world’s largest watch group.
