Precision watchmaking since 1832: the history of Longines

It all began in 1832, when watchmaker Auguste Agassiz founded a watchmaking workshop in the Swiss village of Saint-Imier. While individual watch components were still manufactured at home and assembled in the workshop under his management, his nephew Ernest Francillon took over the business in 1854 and decided to set up a factory for the industrial mass production of mechanical watches. This was established in 1867 on a field known colloquially as “Les Longines” (the long meadows). A name that the managing director at the time liked so much that it was adopted as the brand name. The manufacture can still be found here in Saint-Imier today, producing watches in the traditional way.

The world's oldest registered brand in the watch segment

The then Managing Director of Longines decided early on to protect his watches against counterfeiting and registered the brand name and the still unmistakable engraving of the winged hourglass with the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property in 1889. This was followed by the extension of trademark protection to global markets. Today, the Longines brand is the oldest registered watch brand of our time.
