Porsche Design watches: elegance and functionality skilfully combined
When you think of Porsche, the first thing that comes to mind is certainly the legendary sports cars of the brand from Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen. But with Porsche Design, the company has managed to create an entire cosmos around cars, which today also includes iconic timepieces, glasses, bags, fashion and much more. The proximity to motorsport is not only visually unmistakable, but also in the selection of technologies and materials, the designers are influenced by the automotive industry and often use the raw material titanium for their watches, for example. The Porsche Design Chronograph with the REF. 7750, which was created in collaboration with the Orfina company from Grenchen, Switzerland, is considered particularly iconic – a real collector’s item and a safe investment. Porsche Design – luxurious lifestyle since 1972
The history of Porsche Design dates back to 1972. Ferdinand Alexander Porsche founded the company in Stuttgart and was previously best known for his design of the Porsche 911. When the parent company was looking for a gift for long-time employees, Ferdinand Alexander designed the company’s first wristwatch: the Chronograph 1. This was inspired by the dashboard of a sports car and was the first commercially produced watch with a black-coated case and strap. Over the years, many other watches followed, including famous designs such as the watches of the Ocean series or the Compass. Nowadays, Porsche Design also works with other major customers and develops exclusive designs in the design studio in Zell am See – from luxury yachts to laptops and smartphones.
Why Luxury Lovers Choose Porsche Design
What makes a Porsche Design timepiece so special? The uncompromising dedication to developing precise, functional and at the same time sporty watches. The careful selection of high-quality materials. The eye for real innovations that offer added value to the wearers of the watches. There are many reasons to buy a watch from Porsche Design. For example, the company always relies on high-quality raw materials for the manufacture of its watches, including titanium, stainless steel or rose gold, and uses in-house calibers with a chronometer certificate for many models. Another plus point: many of the Maison’s timepieces are only available as limited editions, which significantly increases their collector’s value. A Porsche Design watch is always an investment and an enrichment for any collection.
IWC and Porsche Design
Since Porsche Design initially started as a design office, it outsourced designs for watches and more in the early years. In 1978, this position was taken over by IWC from Schaffhausen – a partnership that was to last around 20 years and produce exciting watch creations.
A true icon: the Chronograph 1
The 911 is still a true sports car icon today and it is impossible to imagine fast-paced sport without it. Driven by the success of the car, Porsche Design developed a suitable watch in 1972 that would show racing drivers the time even under adverse conditions: the Chronograph 1 was born. But the timepiece didn’t just score points with its functionality – it is also the first chronograph to come completely in black. The watch owed its special appearance to the instrument panel of the 911. And the legacy of the watch is also impressive in the All Black Numbered Edition – a true enrichment for any collection!
A special watch with a secret function: the Compass
An icon of the joint partnership: the Compass by IWC. It is 39 mm in size and, depending on the version, comes in blackened aluminum or brushed titanium. The black dial makes the brightly luminescent line indices and baton hands stand out particularly well. Even though the watch looks like an ordinary 3-hand watch, it still hides a secret inside. This is because the housing is divided into two parts and can be opened with the help of a hinge to reveal an internal compass. For example, opt for a high-quality Compass with the REF. 3551 with moon phase display or a Compass with the REF. 3511 for men.
Functional and robust: the Ocean series
The partnership also resulted in the legendary diver’s watch from Porsche Design – the watches of the Ocean series. Their bezel can be rotated on one side, and the water resistance of the watches is 300 meters. Special versions such as the Ocean 2000, on the other hand, are waterproof to depths of 2,000 meters. The dial of this men’s watch is also designed in black to ensure optimal readability. In addition, the hour markers are filled with a beige luminous material, which makes it possible to read the time even in poor visibility conditions. Whether new or used – the watches of the Ocean series are a great enrichment for every collector!
Porsche Design collaborates with Eterna
In 1995, Porsche Design finally took the next step and acquired shares in Eterna SA from Grenchen in order to have its watches manufactured by the traditional manufacturer for the next few years. This partnership would also produce iconic designs that revolutionized the watch market and helped the company gain global renown.
Long Island and Master Square
Franck Muller is taking a completely different direction with the Long Island collection. The Franck Muller Long Island is a tribute to the Art Deco movement and is characterized above all by its rectangular shape and its iconic numerals. The Franck Muller Long Island is also available in different versions, for example in gold (1200 T) or with a days display. The Master Square is also inspired by the Art Deco style. Characteristic of this dress watch is the symmetry of the line and the geometric case, which does not house the iconic Franck Muller numerals, but Roman numerals. For example, opt for a dress watch with the code number 6000 H QZ REL R.
Suitable for men and women: the models of the P10 series
In cooperation with Eterna, the Stuttgart-based company developed, among other things, the P10 model series, which has a quartz movement and is made of brushed stainless steel. Thanks to its 28 mm to 39 mm versions, the watch can be worn equally by both sexes. On request, the timepieces in this series are also available as automatic and, depending on the version, are also available at a low price.
The Flat Six line is based on the luxury sports car
Also the result of the collaboration with Eterna is the Flat Six line. This is named after the company’s six-cylinder boxer engines and impresses with its large Arabic numerals and a flat crown. The clock is set by the proven caliber ETA 2892-A2. To adapt to any wrist, the 3-hand variants are available in sizes 40 and 44 mm.
The successor to the Chronograph 1 – the Chronotimer Series 1
To pay tribute to the first designed watch, the company soon launched a modern successor: the Chronotimer Series 1. Just like its predecessor, the Chronotimer also comes in a dark design, but thanks to a titanium carbide coating, it is much more robust than its predecessor. The second hand, which is usually in red, provides dynamism, while the tachymeter scale, which is obligatory for racing chronographs, can be found on the bezel. Ticking inside the Chronotimer is an ETA Valjoux 7750. By the way: The popular watch is also available with a flyback function and comes in this version with the in-house caliber WERK 01.200.
Purist and sporty – the 1919 collection
The 1919 collection is also one of the well-known launches of the Stuttgart-based company and honours the founding year of the Bauhaus art school with its name. In keeping with this in mind, the design of the watches is also simple and sporty. For example, opt for a 1919 Datetimer as a three-hand model, whose dial can be either dark or blue. If you often change time zones, a 1919 Globetimer is the best choice. Whether new or pre-owned: Thanks to the second time zone, travelling around the globe is even more comfortable.
