Today, the TAG Heuer company can look back on an eventful history that began in 1860. At the age of just 20, Edouard Heuer founded a watchmaking workshop on his family’s farm in Saint-Imier. Here he mainly produced pocket watches made of silver. A little later, in 1864, Heuer moved his company to Brugg and renamed it Edouard Heuer & Compagnie. The next move followed in 1867, this time to Biel in the canton of Bern, where it would remain for more than 100 years. As early as 1869, Heuer also made a name for itself in the world by obtaining the first patent for a crown-winding mechanism without a key. When sporting competitions finally began to spread in the 1880s, Heuer quickly recognized the importance of its pocket chronographs in these events and began producing large quantities. The chronographs quickly became a status symbol among athletes and were also very popular at horse races. In 1887, Heuer finally developed another patent to improve the oscillating drive. The next groundbreaking innovation, the chronograph could now be started and stopped directly using a pusher. The “perfect chronograph”, as the inventor called it, was born.

Uncompromisingly precise - in Switzerland and around the world

The beginning of the 20th century brought with it many innovations, for example in medicine, production and science. The demand for precise time measurement became ever louder, as hundredths of a second often mattered. Here too, the company, which was now known beyond the country’s borders, did not need to be asked twice and excelled with inventions such as the “Sphygometer” chronograph, which enabled doctors to determine a patient’s pulse by counting their heartbeats for just 20 seconds. To measure the time of a car journey, the company again developed a chronograph for the dashboard, the “Time of Trip”. The first wrist chronograph from TAG Heuer finally followed in 1914. From then on, the Maison continued to expand its range of wristwatches and eventually became the global market leader in wrist chronographs. A new era began with the arrival of Jack Heuer, the fourth generation to run the company. In the years that followed, TAG Heuer continued to set new standards and revolutionized the market with new wrist chronographs, stopwatches and on-board instruments. Another milestone for the Maison came in 1985, when the company launched the Series 2000, a special collection of diving watches that were water-resistant to a depth of 200 meters and ensured perfect readability thanks to their sapphire crystal.
