The history of the TUDOR brand

The history of Tudor dates back to 1926. 15 years after the successful founding of Rolex, Hans Wilsdorf had the idea of creating a cheaper alternative to the Swiss Maison. However, the inventor did not want to compromise on quality. With this in mind, Wilsdorf registered the company name “Tudor” in reference to the Welsh royal family and later chose the rose, the symbol of the Tudor dynasty, as the logo. However, it would be another 20 years before the founder presented his collection to the general public. When the wristwatch celebrated its great success after the end of the Second World War, Wilsdorf presented the first models, which, like Rolex, were characterized by a sporty design and incredible robustness. However, he used movements from suppliers for his creations – even today, Tudor is still supplied by ETA in order to be able to offer the watches at a comparatively low price.

Sophisticated marketing with its finger on the pulse

Since its foundation in the 1920s, the brand has been based on the image of its parent company. In the 1950s and 1960s, however, the marketing consciously distanced itself from the luxury world of the Maison and showed the watches at work in road construction and mining. Wilsdorf wanted to use these images to show that the timepieces could withstand even the most extreme conditions. Over the years, however, the hard line between the parent company and Tudor became increasingly blurred and the brand became more and more oriented towards the world of luxury. In 2010, Tudor launched the first model of the Heritage collection to give the company new impetus and return to its original idea of selling robust watches of high quality at an affordable price. The company breathed new life into popular watches from the 1950s and 1960s, triggering a whole series of vintage interpretations in the industry.

Reflecting on your own values - the chronographs

Chronographs have always had a special place in the history of Tudor. The first watch in this series, the Oysterdate Chronograph, was presented in 1970. With a case size of 39 mm and a Valjoux caliber 7734, the watch immediately enjoyed great popularity and was characterized above all by the strikingly beveled edges of the lugs. The colorful design of the dial also contributed to the great success of the watch and gave it an individual character. Another watch in the series followed in 1977, this time as an automatic, which was produced until the 1990s and is still very popular today as a vintage automatic watch.

Popular models from Tudor

Over the years, Maison Tudor has produced a whole range of popular ladies’ watches and men’s watches that enrich any collection, and continues to inspire with new innovations and creations that make the hearts of true watch fans beat faster. In addition to the famous Black Bay, the Maison’s range also includes many other series, some of which are classic men’s watches with leather straps, others are diver’s watches. What they all have in common, however, is their high quality standards and unconditional robustness, which often makes a Tudor a companion for life.

Tudor Black Bay: the striking diver's watch

The Maison is known all over the world for its famous diving watches, especially the Black Bay. A true classic that has been making a name for itself since 1946. It is not for nothing that celebrities from the film industry and sport, including David Beckham, like to wear a Black Bay on their wrist and appreciate the striking design of the TUDOR diver’s watch. For example, the watches in the Black Bay range are characterized by their spectacular winding crown and the engraving of the characteristic Tudor rose on the stainless steel case. To guarantee optimum readability in any situation, the hands and hour indices are also provided with a luminous material. The watches in the Black Bay collection owe their enormous robustness primarily to their stainless steel case, which guarantees water resistance to a depth of 200 meters. Whether as a Black Bay 41, Black Bay 58, Black Bay GMT or Black Bay Chrono – discover watches from the Tudor Black Bay series at SG Watches and let our specialists advise you on the special features of the timepieces if required.

Tudor Pelagos: elegant sportiness

The Tudor Pelagos is also at home underwater and is specially designed for the demands of underwater sports. It was launched in 2012 and is characterized by its satin-finished titanium and stainless steel case, which is water-resistant to a depth of 500 meters. The highlights of the Pelagos include the helium valve and the large luminous applications, which make it possible to read the time under the surface of the water, even in poor visibility conditions. The Pelagos also has a diver’s bezel with a numerical screw and a bezel ring on the inside. In the watches prior to 2015, the Maison used a self-winding mechanical movement (Ref. 25500TN) with a power reserve of around 38 hours. In 2015, Tudor finally surprised with an innovation. Since then, the MT5612 caliber has been used for the watches, which is self-winding and has an impressive power reserve of over 70 hours (e.g. in the Ref. 25600TB and the Ref. 25600TN).

Tudor Heritage: true legends of the watch world

When Tudor launched the Heritage series in 2010, the Maison achieved a real breakthrough that made the watches popular all over the world. The style of the watches is based on the racing chronometer from the 1970s, but the new watches have a manufacture caliber, 150-meter water resistance and a bidirectional rotating bezel.

More models from Tudor

Even though Tudor is primarily known for true classics such as the Tudor Black Bay 58, the Black Bay GMT or the Black Bay Ceramic and the Pelagos FXD, the Maison also has many other watches that leave nothing to be desired in terms of style and quality. One example is the Royal, a sports watch with a stainless steel case that is available with a choice of dials in different colors and optionally set with diamonds. In addition to sportiness, elegance also takes center stage here, for example with the Royal Day & Date. The Tudor Black Bay Bronze is also certainly worth a look, with its captivating bronze case and slate gray dial.
